Public Health Department
Public Health Department of Maharashtra is the principal organization in Maharashtra providing a strategic leadership for public health care. The organization focuses on providing an array of citizen centric services across the State with its various policies, legislation and administration. The department has formulated and executed various health programmes in line with National Health Policy enabling a better administration, better health, better care, and better value for all.
The department provides an ambit of healthcare services through its extensive network of hospitals and primary health care centers.
The prime objectives of the department are:
  • To provide holistic healthcare facilities to the citizens of Maharashtra
  • To provide and implement multiple National Health Programmes
  • To provide greater access to primary health care services in rural and backward regions
  • To reduce the maternal and infant mortality rate
  • To improve hospital services at the secondary levels both in terms of infrastructure and personnel
  • To provide adequate training facilities to doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff to upgrade their skills at par with national standards
  • To improve the maintenance of buildings
  • To adequately educate the citizens on healthcare system

In line with the promotion of the National Healthcare Programmes, Public Health Department is also implementing various State level projects/schemes as:

Medical Education Department
  • The Office of The Surgeon General of Maharashtra state was separated on 1st May 1970, into two independent directorates namely The Directorate of Medical Education and Research and The Directorate of Health Services.
  • Department's prime objectives are :
    • To develop trained, skilled and competent human resource for healthcare services as well as Medical and Dental Education.
    • Ensure availability of quality healthcare and create state -of- the- art infrastructure in state government run medical and dental college hospitals.
  • Department oversees the working of 42 institutions including Medical and Dental Colleges, Teaching Hospitals and Health Units under its purview in order to achieve optimum academic standards.Promotion of research in instituitions is encouraged. Despite existing financial constraints, efforts are made to provide maximum facilities required for students' education (Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Super Specialities), hospital services and research.
  • The Directorate of Medical Education and Research controls and regulates the administration of 14 Government Medical colleges and Hospitals along with Urban and Rural Health centres attached to them.The total bed strength is 12,221. It also regulates 3 Government Dental colleges and Hospitals. The Directorate supervises the Medical Education i.e.Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Super Specialisation. It also co-ordinates the Research activities in Fundamental Research, Applied Research and Operational Research in the Institutions under its control and through Out-reach Services. This enables the Government to improve Health Status of the people in the society
  • The Director Medical Education is assisted by the Joint Directors. The Superintendent of Nursing Services is in charge of Nursing Education and works under the Director.
  • All the Medical, Dental and Nursing Colleges are affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik
  • M.B.B.S degree and BDS Degree awarded is recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council of India (DCI).
  • Apart from postgraduate courses in various Medical Broad Specialities like Medicine, Surgery, OBGY, Pathology, Radiology etc; Superspeciality courses offered include DM Cardiology, DM Neurology M.Ch. Urology / Genito-urinary Surgery M.Ch. CVTS / Thoracic-surgery, MCh Plastic Surgery, MCh Paediatric-Surgery, MCh Neuro-Surgery and Dental Postgraduate courses offered include Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Orthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics, Prosthodontics.
  • Out of 250 Medical Postgraduate courses, 204 are MCI Recognized and 42 are permitted by MCI
  • The Department also conducts Common Entrance test for Health Science Courses and the The Director Medical Education and Research is the competent authority for Common Entrance test for admission to Health Science Courses (MHT-CET).
  • Health Science Courses offered include MBBS, BDS, BOTh, BPTh, BSc. Nursing, MSc Nursing, PGDMLT, BPMT, various medical and dental postgraduate and superspeciality courses.
  • The Medical Research Council Of Maharashtra (MRCM) has been established under DMER to encourage biomedical research in medical, dental, ayurved, homeopath, nursing students and doctors, occupational therapists and physiotherapists by providing financial assistance for carrying out individual projects in their specific fields of interest . The Minister of State for Medical Education is President of the Council and Director of Medical Education and Research is Member Secretary. One of the main activities of MRCM is Star Research Scheme under which per year 10 research projects are sanctioned and grant released to the tune of Rs 20 lacs
